Grant Making Strategy Summary
Introduction
In accordance with the Trust Deed, the Trustees make grants to:
The Trust Deed prohibits Trustees from making grants to charitable bodies primarily devoted to children or which are under the control of central or any local government.
The Trustees have a clear preference for supporting charities and projects in the North West of England, from where the Trust Fund monies originally emanated.
Categorization
In each category, Trustees will consider the following areas:
-
Medical charities - research and care specifically aimed at benefitting older people, to include Alzheimers, Macular Disease, Prostate Cancer, Parkinson’s Disease
-
Charities in connection with old people - Old Age, Homes, Carers
-
Charities for people fallen upon hard times – Disabled,
Hospital, Hospices, Ex services, Natural or Man-made
disasters, Mental Health, Homelessness.
Principles
The Trustees apply the following criteria in making grants:
1. There is no geographical limitation on applications; however applications from charities in the “Preferred Locations” of Lancashire (especially Lancaster and District), Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Merseyside will receive preference over applications from other geographical areas.
2. The Trustees focus on small to medium sized charities where grants will make a difference. Applications from large well-funded charities (with income in excess of £2.5m per annum) will normally be rejected, unless the project is a capital project.
3. The Trustees aim to support fewer charities with larger average grants (£5000 +).
4. The Trustees’ preference is to support capital projects or project driven applications and not running costs, although the Trustees are flexible to take account of the needs of smaller charities.
5. The Trustees do make grants to disaster appeals which
are considered on a case by case basis.
Awareness
The trustees feel it is important to know the charities to which grants are or may be awarded. They will therefore from time to time arrange to visit the charity and/or arrange for the charity to make a presentation to a Trustees meeting.

Applications to be considered for a major grant will be assessed en-block annually at the Trustee’s March meeting. Applications will be competitive and will be met from funds set aside for this purpose. The following additional information is required:
1. Aims, Objectives and Direction of the research project
2. The Institution where the research will be carried out and by whom (Principal researchers)
3. Outline of costs and of funding required for the project and details of any funds already in hand.
A brief (but not too technical) annual report on the progress of projects receiving major grants will be requested from the research team.
