The Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust was founded in 1951 with the emphasis on helping medical charities and research, old people, and those “who have fallen on evil days through no fault of their own”

General background

The Trustees meet on at least three occasions each year. All applications for grants are first vetted by the Secretary or the Chairman and another Trustee. Any applications rejected at this stage are listed in the agenda for the next trustees’ meeting with the reason for rejection. Applications for consideration at the trustees’ meeting are presented with a report and summary of the financial statements for the last complete year.

Trustees are appointed by the unanimous agreement of existing Trustees.

Grant making policy

a) General

The Trustees prefer to support specific projects rather than general operating expenses. They regret that, due to the number of applications they receive, they are not normally able to support small local charities with gross income of less than £50,000 pa. The Trustees scrutinise the financial position of applicants, and those with Income Accounts showing substantial surpluses are unlikely to be supported. Applications from individuals are not accepted.

b) Applications for Medical Research Grants

The Trustees have been receiving an increased number of requests for grants towards medical research as well as their other commitments.

Therefore a research reserve account was established to promote a fair and efficient distribution of funds at their disposal to support medical research.

Applications for medical research grants are categorised, as appropriate, for a ‘minor grant’(£10,000 or less) or a ‘major grant’ (greater than £10,000 per annum for a defined research project for 1-3 years). Applications to be considered for a major grant are assessed en bloc annually at the Trustees’ March meeting. Applications are competitive and are met from funds set aside for this purpose. The following information is required:

1 A general outline of the aim, objectives and direction of the research project.

2 The institution where the research will be carried out and by whom (principal researchers).

3 Outline of costs and of funding required for the project and details of any funds already in hand.

4 As with all applications to the Dowager Countess Eleanor Peel Trust, the Annual Report and Accounts of the charity/institution concerned.

Where the application is received well in advance of the Trustees’ March meeting, an update of any change to the above may be required nearer to the time.

A brief (but not too technical) annual report on the progress of each project supported with a major grant is requested from the research team.

If you wish to be considered for a grant you will find the full strategy guidelines and an application form here
